Top Gear has a terrific article showcasing the M prototypes that never made production. I’m sure all of you will like at least one of them.

Gib M3 Compact pls. Since obviously Top Gear doesn’t want it.

I can’t believe BMW actually uses those utes for parts transport. That’s so cool.

Although these aren’t M cars, Top Gear did an article on past BMW concepts:

I want the M3 Touring bad. Or any M wagon.

Though there are M prototypes that weren’t covered there:

I thought that was great as well. It’s nice to see a manufacturer thoroughly engineer a concept car and actually use it.

Looks like Kinja ate it, I posted photos but it didn’t copy over correctly:

They’re both neat for different reasons. The 2nd one is something I would not expect at all from BMW>

Those lines. That long roof and massive greenhouse. That practicality. That engine. That epic E46 battle stance.

Not sure if it still is, but it was thought up by golfer Stuart Appleby and built by a custom shop in Australia back in 2008. Started life as an M5 and was converted to a ute while making over 450hp.

I always look forward to seeing your posts haha. There’s a guy local to me (or he was when I lived in LA) who fully converted his E46 wagon to M specs, S54 and all.

You’re too kind, my friend.

My goodness. That sounds like quite the modification. Did you ever get to ride in it?

How have you been? I didn’t realize you had moved.

I’m usually not a fan of one-offs because they often don’t quite turn out right, but this guy cut no corners and just knocked it out of the park.

God I wish. It’s an impeccable conversion, full front clip and rear widebody too.

I’ve been good! Just moved to Seattle a couple weeks ago to get a BS in mechanical engineering, left my Z in LA for the time being. Not having my own transport is killing me though, so that won’t last long.

I’m guessing the limitation in most cases is money. Very expensive and time-intensive to do right.

You really have to know you’re going to love the end product and commit to enjoy it long time, because the odds are very small that you’ll get out anything near what you invest when you customize a car to these lengths.

That sounds amazing.

That’s wonderful! I wish you luck with that. Concerning the vehicle, I can definitely understand how frustrating that would be, especially when you’re so used to having your own.

Though it’s from near 30 miles away from where I lived, I didn’t see it until Monterey at an event with not one, but TWO 50-state legal E34 M5 wagons. Glorious cars.

In the way of cars, I’m trying my best to work something out with a local import shop about photographing their cars in exchange for the chance to drive them, or possibly I’ll just start bringing down some cars from Canada for friends since I’m so close to the border.

The /M division seems to have gone tame in recent years. If some sort of M2 CSL or GTS variant does see the light of day I might plop a deposit down.

Daily driving of the 07' Z4MC is getting to be risky business and a warranty might be nice.

So, I looked it up and honestly can’t believe the new M2 weighs 3,400lbs. I think it would be great to see a lightweight CSL or GTS version reduce that to around 3,200 lbs. then again it shouldn’t be that high in the first place.

M2 (MT):

WHEELBASE 106.0 in

LENGTH x WIDTH x HEIGHT 176.2 x 73.0 x 55.5 in

3,411 lb (52/48%)

M2 (C&D):

Wheelbase: 106.0 in
Length: 176.2 in x Width: 73.0 in x  Height: 55.5 in
Curb weight: 3415 lb

It is a slightly large proposition given the positive reviews it has received. Granted, most are not heaping praise in contrast to the E46 M3 and Z4MC of lore but rather the late model M3s and sluggish pony cars.

I just transitioned into a new company that will have my Z4M on the road an extra 5-6K miles a year. Recent conversations and gas station compliments have shown me this car is unique with collector potential - hopefully I can steward it through this DD phase and avoid letting it go for a warrantied commute friendly sports car.
